Steering and Rules Committee to consider adoption of new City flag Monday
On Monday, September 9, the Common Council’s Steering and Rules Committee will consider file #240407 – a resolution relating to the adoption of a new City flag. The file, sponsored by Alderman Peter Burgelis, seeks to adopt “Sunrise Over the Lake”, also known as the people’s flag, as the official City of Milwaukee flag.
“The current flag from 1955 is a great time capsule of our city at that time, but is no longer relevant or frankly appropriate. Milwaukee is moving forward and looking to the future, and Bay View artist Robert Lenz’s ‘Sunrise Over the Lake’ is a timeless and aspirational design that will represent Milwaukee for generations to come,” Alderman Burgelis said.
The file comes after the Alderman spent the month of August visiting all parts of the city to share information and collect feedback on both the current and proposed new City flags. It is expected that testimony during Monday’s committee meeting will feature John Gurda, Steve Kodis, and Reggie Jackson.
The Steering and Rules Committee meeting will begin at 1:30 p.m. on September 9, and will be streamed live on the City Channel (channel 25 on Spectrum Cable and channel 99 on AT&T U-Verse in the City of Milwaukee) and via streaming video on the city website at city.milwaukee.gov/Channel25.
