Sam’s Place Jazz Café Closing its Doors, Celebrates Legacy of Community, Culture, and Coffee

Milwaukee, WI — [February 17, 2025] — After nearly five years of serving as a gathering place for good food, coffee, connection, and community, Sam’s Place Jazz Café announces that it will close its doors on Fri., Feb. 20 due to ongoing economic challenges and shifts in the local business landscape.

This decision was not made lightly. Like many locally owned restaurants, Sam’s Place Jazz Cafe has navigated rising costs, changing consumer patterns, and the lasting impacts of broader economic trends. Despite these challenges, Milwaukee’s Jazziest Coffeehouse has remained rooted in its mission: to nourish community, deliver locally roasted coffee, create space for connection, and contribute to the cultural fabric of Milwaukee through jazz music.

“While this chapter is coming to a close, what we built together will always live on, in the relationships formed with neighbors, the memories shared with patrons, and the community we were honored to serve. We remain hopeful about what’s next and grateful for the journey,” said Founder & Owner Sam Belton.

Community members are invited to visit Sam’s Place during its final days of operation and its Black History Soul Food lunch on Thurs., Feb. 19 from 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. to share memories, express gratitude, and celebrate the legacy together. Café hours for this final week of operation are Wednesday thru Friday 7:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.

Since opening in 2021, Sam’s Place has been more than a place to eat. It has been a space for celebration, conversation, live music, and community, supporting local artists, employing community members, and welcoming neighbors from near and far. Bader Philanthropies invested in Sam’s Place to enable them to expand their facilities and meet the needs of Harambee neighbors, providing a space where community could gather.

“Bader Philanthropies moved to Harambee in 2018 to connect with human beings and to enrich how the Foundation sees its work. Sam’s Place’s enabled people from around Milwaukee to engage in meaningful dialogue and imagine what is possible for our community,” shared Dan Bader, president/CEO of Bader Philanthropies.

“Bader Philanthropies’ support of our business was more than an investment. It was a statement of their belief in me and this community,” added Sam Belton. “We are thankful for their commitment and for standing with us as we grew a space where everyone belongs.”

The team extends deep gratitude to its patrons, dedicated staff, partners, and supporters who believed in the vision and helped sustain the restaurant through both prosperous and challenging seasons.
