Chairwoman Nicholson Celebrates Success of Roller Skating Initiative at Red Arrow Park

MILWAUKEE – Chairwoman Marcelia Nicholson is thrilled to announce the triumph of Roll Train and the Milwaukee County Parks department in making roller skating a reality at Red Arrow Park. Chairwoman Nicholson, a key advocate for establishing a roller rink in Red Arrow Park made the following statement:

“I am immensely proud of Roll Train’s accomplishments and the collaborative efforts made by the Milwaukee County Parks Department,” said Chairwoman Nicholson. “Roller skating provides a wonderful recreational opportunity for our community, promoting physical activity, positive engagement, and togetherness. This achievement would not have been possible without the dedication and support of all those involved.”

Chairwoman Nicholson authored a proposal last June to allocate $175,000 toward a pilot program for the rink. The proposal was adopted with 2/3 support of the County Board but was ultimately vetoed by the County Executive. Later that year, she offered a budget amendment, which, among other things, provided $32,000 to hire seasonal staff to supervise roller skating at Red Arrow Park. The amendment was adopted and included in the County’s 2023 budget.

Recently, Milwaukee County Parks made the decision to open Red Arrow Park’s renowned ice-skating rink to roller skating during the warmer months. The response from the skating community has been overwhelmingly positive, with many eagerly awaiting this opportunity.

In addition to the roller-skating access during regular hours, Roll Train is collaborating with Milwaukee Downtown and Milwaukee County Parks for Summer Spinz. The event series offers roller skating, DJ sets, and food trucks every third Friday in June, July, and August.

Chairwoman Nicholson encourages residents to take advantage of this exciting addition to Red Arrow Park and invites everyone to experience the love and joy of roller skating in the heart of downtown Milwaukee.
