Every Wednesday at noon, Ryan Schleicher, Evan Rytlewski, and Matt Wild take to the WMSE airwaves to discuss all things Milwaukee. This half-hour fun-fest is called The Disclaimer, so named because none of the oft-ridiculous views expressed on the show necessarily reflect the views of the hosts’ employers. Milwaukee music, Milwaukee art, Milwaukee events, and D.I.Y. lawn care tips are frequently discussed—and rarely agreed upon. The Disclaimer: Talk radio for the sane.
On Tuesday, June 14 (Flag Day), Milwaukee will be the proud recipient of a new official city flag. Following an outcry from Milwaukeeans young and old over an antiquated and vexillology-affronting flag that rarely saw the light of day, city officials organized a contest to redesign the once-proud Milwaukee symbol. The people submitted their unique and quirky new designs, whittled the field down to five candidates, and are now currently voting for their favorite. Civic pride is at an all-time high, and the city awaits the announcement of the new symbol for a united and proud Milwaukee.
Except not. The current “People’s Flag of Milwaukee” competition has been the source of many irate Disclaimer episodes, and now, with the campaign picking up a ton of media-generated steam, it fuels the flames once again. Ryan, Evan, and Matt discuss Evan’s thorough rebuttal to the change-the-flag craze, the optics of creating a flag that will likely fly in opposition to the current flag, gussied-up culture wars, the dearly held tenets of good flag design, Spaceballs, and Matt’s use of the word “tizzy.” They also take calls from supporters during WMSE’s Spring Membership Drive, which is currently in full swing.
