Even with films like Blue Velvet and Mulholland Drive under his belt (not to mention the third season of Twin Peaks), David Lynch’s Wild At Heart is the director’s most wonderfully garish creation. The 1990 crime/romance/road movie is grotesque, hyper-violent, and hyper-sexual. It’s big and bold with its references: Nicolas Cage as Elvis, Laura Dern as Marilyn, the whole Wizard Of Oz thing. It was largely reviled upon its release (despite winning the Palme d’Or at the 1990 Cannes Film Festival), and it narrowly avoided an X/NC-17 rating.

But hell, Peanut, Wild At Heart absolutely rules. And we’re screening it on Wednesday, January 24 at the Avalon Atmospheric Theater. Reserved-seating tickets to the 7 p.m. show (sponsored by Lakefront Brewery and Gruber Law Offices) are $11, and are on sale NOW.

“After serving prison time for a self-defense killing,” reads the official synopsis, “Sailor Ripley (Nicolas Cage) reunites with girlfriend Lula Fortune (Laura Dern). Lula’s mother, Marietta (Diane Ladd), desperate to keep them apart, hires a hit man to kill Sailor. But he finds a whole new set of troubles when he and Bobby Peru (Willem Dafoe), an old buddy who’s also out to get Sailor, try to rob a store. When Sailor lands in jail yet again, the young lovers appear further than ever from the shared life they covet.”

And don’t forget the whole “Wicked Game” scene! And the “Love Me Tender” scene! And Crispin Glover as Jingle Dell! See you on the 24th! Get those tickets NOW!
