As is the case with most forms of art here in the year 2025, music is currently in a strange and difficult place. Thanks—or no thanks—to the prevalence of streaming services that only pay fractions of a fraction of a penny per play, musicians are now forced to work harder than ever to obtain less compensation for their art than ever before.
Some willingly give away their music in hopes of drawing people to the merch booth at their live shows. A few opt to withhold material from streaming platforms altogether as a means of encouraging listeners to pay up for physical media. Many just begrudgingly accept the cruel, thankless, and poorly-compensating fate of modern day independent musicians and relegate their passion and creativity to a low-paying hobby. R.A.P. Ferreira is doing something a little bit different.
The eponymous ethereal hip-hop project of Milwaukee ex-pat Rory Allen Phillip Ferreira—who previously released music under the Milo and Scallops Hotel monikers—is allowing fans to determine the value of the project’s latest album each and every day through the end of 2025. On August 12, Ferreira started holding a daily auction for one copy of Outstanding Understanding on his website.
Featuring exclusive album artwork by Yafet Selah, vinyl sales of the 15-track 2025 release have been limited to just 143 copies that will be available online. Every afternoon, the highest bidder gets one of the limited edition albums, which is shipped insured with a letter signed by Ferreira. Then another action begins at zero, giving fans another opportunity to try to obtain one of these rare records for a price they deem to be worthwhile.
Since this unique artist-controlled means of music distribution started, some records have fetched close to $300. Most auctions culminate with a winning bid somewhere in the $200-$250 range. A few times, bidders lucked into a copy for under $200. At the time of this post, today’s high bid is currently $111.11 with just under six hours remaining.
By limiting output and letting listeners (and yeah, perhaps some vinyl flippers as well) determine the value themselves, Ferreira has found a way to maximize his music’s worth and be fairly compensated for it in the process. Sure, this isn’t something every musician can expect to do with the same level of success as the accomplished and well-known rapper, but it’s inspiring to see nonetheless.
