Attention! Fans of iconic emo projects, accomplished indie rock acts, free outdoor concerts, and beloved Bay View beer bars might want to continue reading. Next weekend, Burnhearts (2599 S. Logan Ave., 414-294-0490) will be hosting what they’re referring to as “an intimate evening of music on the patio” that features performances by members of Mineral, The Promise Ring, Maritime, The Gloria Record, Decibully, and more.
From 6-10 p.m. on Friday, August 28, a portion of Potter Ave. in front of the Burnhearts patio parklet will be closed off in order to make room for an uncommon concert consisting of stripped-down sets by the likes of Chris Simpson, an especially rare live outing by Davey von Bohlen, and Justin Klug. Burnhearts co-owner William Seidel tells Milwaukee Record the one-of-a-kind “Songs On The Patio” showcase came about when Simpson—he of Mineral, The Gloria Record, and Mountain Time notoriety—inquired about setting up a Milwaukee date.
“Chris Simpson reached out to me about setting up an intimate show in Milwaukee so that he would have a good excuse to make the trip up and hang out with some old friends like Davey von Bohlen. I haven’t heard Davey sing for a decade or more, so I texted him and asked if he’d be interested in bringing his guitar to the Chris Simpson show and making this a dream lineup,” Seidel says. “Justin Klug [ex-Maritime and Decibully] bartends at Burnhearts on Fridays and he’s the singer in my band, Lessons, so I figured he could jump out from behind the bar and open the show with a few tunes. Somehow I booked the coolest concert of the summer on our little corner bar patio.”
There’s no cover for this can’t-miss concert, though Seidel says buying drinks and tipping bartenders is “very much encouraged.” Anyone on Burnhearts property must be 21 and older unless accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. If you want to see some emo kingpins playing on a cozy parcel of pavement outside a Bay View bar, make a point to come to see “Songs On The Patio” at Burnhearts on August 28.
