Sometimes unlikely pairings make for the best combinations. Joining such dynamic duos as hot honey on pizza, fried chicken and waffles, and bacon with pretty much anything is a new musical merger that brings together two artists with very different creative backgrounds to form an excellent new project.

That project is Diamond Life, an Italo Disco-inspired endeavor featuring Bonnie Drinkard of the Detroit country-folk outfit The Drinkard Sisters and Milwaukee producer Martin Defatte who makes up one half of Guerrilla Ghost and releases solo material under his Tron Jovi moniker. The two met at one of Defatte’s DJ spins, which actually took place on Drinkard’s first night in town. With her voice as the missing piece, new life was brought to Defatte’s disparate demos that had no home and a new band was born.

Today, Diamond Life released its debut song and an accompanying music video for that first single. “I Can’t Believe It!” scratches that ’80s synth-pop itch as soaring space age production is propelled to even higher altitude by Drinkard’s smooth and impassioned vocals. Complete with neon-tinged stock footage that’s interspliced with footage of Drinkard singing, the Renee Willoughby-produced and -directed music video is a tremendous visual match to the song’s overall style and feel.

“I Can’t Believe It!” is one of nine songs that make up Diamond Life’s forthcoming album, Neon Dreams, that’s due out on Defatte’s Triple Eye Industries label on Friday, May 24. As you await the next single on May 3 and the full album’s release three weeks later, check out the “I Can’t Believe It!” music video now. If you like what you hear, pre-order Neon Dreams (which is available in vinyl, CD, and digital formats) now.
