Last Friday, we stumbled into quite the scene on the city’s east side. It seems that the plumbing from longtime local pizza purveyor Pizza Man (2597 N. Downer Ave.) was leaking through the ceiling of the small bar next to and beneath it, Henry’s (2523 E. Belleview Pl.). What’s more, this was apparently an ongoing, years-long problem. Oh, and a bunch of Pizza Man employees had refused to show up for work because of the issue and so they were told that they had “voluntarily resigned” and so they all went to Henry’s as a show of solidarity with the beleaguered bar and Henry’s bought them a round of shots.

The operator of Pizza Man, F Street Hospitality, wouldn’t comment on any HR-related matters for our original story, but they did send us this statement:
We are relieved to have found a temporary solution after weeks of working with plumbing professionals, and are well on our way to having a permanent one in place very shortly. We are sincerely remorseful for any negative impact on their business and will continue to work with them to get this fully resolved.
The past two years have been very trying, as we are also a small, locally owned business. We value our team members. We will continue to work with them to create a positive experience for the team, our customers and our community.
On Monday, Pizza Man/F Street doubled down on their apology in a comments-locked Facebook post. The note reads:
We are genuinely sorry for any inconveniences experienced during the plumbing issue at our Downer Avenue location.
There were unfortunate and avoidable lapses in communication that we take full responsibility for, resulting in many passionate reactions. That passion is part of why we love our community. We’re happy to say that our plumbers have located the issue and are implementing a permanent solution now. We have communicated this solution to our staff and co-tenant, Henry’s Bar.
Together, we’re moving forward to ensure a situation like this doesn’t happen again. We’re improving our communication processes across all levels and continuing talks with all affected.
Pizza Man has always been a local, community-driven establishment, and we’re proud to remain that way. We look forward to serving you again soon.
