In February 2024, business partners Katy Klinnert and Sara McConville assumed ownership of beloved neighborhood treasure McBob’s Pub & Grill (4919 W. North Ave.; 414-871-5050). “I looked around and I thought, ‘this is Milwaukee,'” Klinnert told Urban Milwaukee at the time. “If you’ve ever wanted a glimpse into the reality of what this city is like: it is diverse, it is beautiful, it is ‘Midwest nice.'”
One year later, it seems some folks need a reminder on the whole “Midwest nice” thing.
On Thursday, McBob’s posted a message to social media that politely reminds patrons not to be screaming, petulant, raging assholes to their servers—even if a server “accidentally served you root beer instead of Dr Pepper.” OH GOD THE HORROR. The full message reads:
PSA: we love our customers but we have to talk about some hard things. Last week two of our servers were brought to tears by the treatment they received from guests. We are a family here at McBob’s and we want to let you know that yelling, screaming, cursing at, or any other inappropriate behavior will NOT be tolerated and you will be asked to leave immediately. We are human beings—so we’re not always perfect. We make mistakes. But we’re always willing to make it right if we do mess something up. Always. However, if you scream at our servers because someone accidentally served you root beer instead of Dr Pepper, you will no longer be welcome at McBob’s. Period.
To all of you who are wonderful, kind guests, which is most of you, THANK YOU. We couldn’t do what we do without you!
A good reminder, McBob’s. Especially with St. Patrick’s Day just around the corner!
In our 2019 Mandatory Milwaukee article on McBob’s, we wrote:
Opened in 1986, the bar and restaurant has firmly entrenched itself as an irrefutable local staple. It’s done so with a welcoming atmosphere, amenities like cheap drinks and a Brewers shuttle, a friendly and attentive staff, a wide-ranging clientele, and by serving what could quite possibly be the best Reuben sandwich in the state of Wisconsin. Technically, McBob’s classifies itself as a purveyor of authentic Irish and Scottish cuisine, but it’s so much more than that.
It is so much more than that. It’s also a reminder to be cool, polite, and normal when you’re out to eat. Oh, and to maybe rethink your non-alcoholic beverage of choice. (Dr Pepper over root beer? No way! Just us? Ugh! Ugh! WHERE’S THE MANAGER.)
