One Walker’s Point restaurant has closed its doors for good. Another is refocusing its energy on its previous location.
After roughly two years in business, Japanese restaurant Cute Robot Japanese Kitchen, 704 S. 2nd St., announced its immediate closure on Thursday. Cute Japanese Robot first opened in Walker’s Point in August 2024.
“As of today, Cute Robot is no longer in business and won’t be reopening,” owners Marc and Janet Boettner wrote on social media. “We are heartbroken by this decision, but this is the best path forward for us.”

Also on Thursday, small-batch bakery and cafe Midwest Sad announced that it is “pausing things” at its Walker’s Point location, 601 S. 6th St., and will be resuming service at its previous downtown location in the lower level of 770 N. Jefferson St. (You know, the same lower level as Shah Jee’s.) Midwest Sad made its move to Walker’s Point in August 2025.
“Surprise! We’re resuming service at our downtown location, and pausing things at our spot in Walker’s Point,” wrote owner Samantha Sandrin on social media. “It’s been one year since opening, so we’re taking a bit of time to reflect on what we can do better. Mostly to refocus on what makes us special, the bakery and the community.”
Service at 770 N. Jefferson St. will resume Saturday, September 26, from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. After that, Midwest Sad’s downtown hours will be Monday – Friday, 8 a.m. – 2 p.m.; and Saturday, 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.

At the heart of Midwest Sad it was always about making space for others, but it became more about survival and figuring out how to make it all work, instead of actual growth.
Things are hard af right now so we’re hoping this pause is an opportunity to make the changes needed to accomplish what we originally set out to do. We’re so lucky to have supportive humans like you and we can’t wait to welcome you downtown again!
Our last day of service out of the Walker’s Point location for now will be tomorrow (Thursday 9/24/26 from 8am-4pm).
