The stars will be out August 13 when a new astrology-themed bar, Star Bar, opens at 2011 Ivanhoe Pl. on the city’s East Side.
As we previously reported in June, the location is a small, roughly 700-square-foot section of the vacant Crossroads Collective space. Italian restaurant Nadi Plates was slated to occupy the full space after Crossroads closed in early 2025, but, um, that didn’t happen. (Nadi Plates is now set to open down the street, in the former Pomono Cider Co. space.)
“Star Bar is a celebration-driven hospitality concept built around celebration, cosmic wonder, and belonging,” reads a press release. “Blending a music-forward atmosphere, sparkling disco-ball details, and an environment designed for memory-making, Star Bar creates space for birthdays, milestones, date nights, family gatherings, and spontaneous celebrations. At Star Bar, everyone’s a star.”
Milwaukee developer New Land Enterprises owns the East Side building, and New Land Hospitality Director Emily Chirillo is the main business contact of Star Bar. Chirillo and New Land previously headed up Crossroads Collective, and still operate hidden speakeasy Shanghai in the same building.
“I want Star Bar to feel like a place where anyone can walk in, be themselves and know there is room for them here,” Chirillo says. “My hope is that it becomes the kind of neighborhood bar people return to because it feels welcoming, familiar and the perfect amount of special.”
A Star Bar pop-up was held outside the space at this year’s Summer Soulstice Music Festival.
What can guests expect from the full Star Bar? The press release explains:
Guests can expect an evolving calendar of programming, including curated DJ nights, immersive themed experiences, creative workshops, seasonal celebrations, neighborhood events for all ages, and collaborations with local artists and creatives. The drink menu will feature tap beer, canned beverages, mixed drinks, wine, and specialty cocktails.
“The concept brings together the cosmic wonder of astrology and the excitement of a great night out with new and old friends,” the press release continues. “Astrology is part of the invitation, but never a test, making the experience accessible to guests who know their full birth chart and those who simply want a place to gather.”
East Side BID executive director Ryan Laessig adds:
“The East Side BID 20 is excited for the new Star Bar to join the East Side. Coming from the team behind Shanghai Speakeasy, voted the No. 1 speakeasy in the U.S. by USA TODAY readers choice, we are very excited to see the incredible atmosphere Star Bar will bring to the neighborhood.
