Back in 2022, the Jacob Leinenkugel Brewing Company released a “Lodge Pack” consisting of four fruit-forward and summer-suited beers. At the time, I figured my dear mother was far better qualified than I was to evaluate the quartet of new shandy varietals.
This past March, reps for Leinie’s came knocking again with a limited release Orange Shandy and an imperial “High Shore Shandy” varietal, which prompted me to throw up the Mom Signal™ once more to get the unfiltered, somehow muskie-related thoughts from a Shandy aficionado. Following those two well-received articles, I figured it made sense to ask for her input on another Shandy-related item that found its way into the Milwaukee Record mailbox.
Last month, Leinenkugel’s and Milwaukee Candle Company joined forces to release a limited edition Leinenkugel’s Summer Shandy Candle (also known as the “Summer Shandle”). Here’s a description of the Shandle, which was released in two drops that happened July 16 and July 23:
“Designed to look just like a freshly cracked Summer Shandy, the hand-poured candle is crafted in partnership with Milwaukee Candle Company using 100% soy wax, cotton braided lead-free wicks, and a fragrance blend featuring citronella and lemongrass, with a few drops of Summer Shandy added to the wax. Phthalate-free, paraben-free, vegan, and cruelty-free, the candle burns for more than 40 hours of summertime enjoyment, making it the ultimate dockside and backyard companion.”
Sounds pretty nice, right? Well, it’s marketing copy, so of course it does! But will the Summer Shandle be looked at as fondly by someone in the all-too-important “60-something mom who lives in northeast Wisconsin” demo? We brought the Shandle up north, lit the thing, and hit record. Here’s what she had to say…
“The beer itself is one of my very favorite beers. I first I thought [the candle] was a beer. It’s nice and clean cut. It smells really, really, really good. Citronella is one of my very favorite smells, and it really keeps the mosquitos away. The name is pretty clever. I think it’s a fun idea. It’s a good way not to waste the can, too. Recycle…upcycle. I can’t really smell the beer, but I like the citronella. I buy them to put out on the patio. Sorry, I’m really not much of a candle reviewer to be honest with you, but give me something in a beer can and I’ll try it.”
Well, there you go. Thanks again, mom! The Leinenkugel’s Summer Shandy Candle is currently sold out, but check the Leinie’s online shop sporadically to see if it returns (or to buy other beer-releated candles).
