MILWAUKEE HOSPITALITY PIONEER R.C. SCHMIDT, FOUNDER OF WATER STREET BREWERY, DIES AT 76
Schmidt’s five-decade career helped shape Milwaukee’s hospitality, brewing, and nightlife landscape.
MILWAUKEE, Wis. — Robert C. “R.C.” Schmidt Jr., founder and chairman of 4th Street Management and a pioneering figure in Milwaukee’s hospitality industry, died Tuesday, September 1, 2026, at the age of 76, his family announced today.
Born in St. Louis and raised in Milwaukee, Schmidt attended Dominican High School and the University of Wisconsin–Madison. His connection to Milwaukee would ultimately shape a career devoted to creating places where people could gather, celebrate and feel at home.
Schmidt’s hospitality career began in 1974, when, at just 24 years old, he opened R.C.’s on Milwaukee’s East Side. What began as a neighborhood bar became a local institution, remaining in business for 44 years and serving generations of Milwaukeeans. Former patrons frequently share stories of friendships and even marriages that began there. R.C.’s became more than Schmidt’s first business; it became the foundation of a family hospitality company and a lasting part of Milwaukee bar history.
During the early 1980s, Schmidt expanded into family entertainment as the operator of several area Chuck E. Cheese franchises. He soon turned his attention back to Milwaukee’s restaurant and tavern scene, pursuing what would become one of his most consequential ideas.
On Nov. 7, 1987, R.C. opened Water Street Brewery, Milwaukee’s first brewpub, combining beer brewed on site with a full-service restaurant. Its opening brought new energy to a downtown district that was still years away from becoming the dining and entertainment destination it is today. Water Street Brewery later expanded to Delafield, Grafton, and Oak Creek. In 2022, the original downtown location was renovated and reintroduced as The Brewery, preserving its connection to Milwaukee’s brewing history while adapting the concept for a new generation.
Across more than five decades, Schmidt created, acquired, or operated a wide-ranging collection of Milwaukee-area businesses. His portfolio included R.C.’s, Water Street Brewery, The Brewery, Louise’s Trattoria, Andrew’s Bar & Restaurant, the Historic Turner Restaurant, River House, Rudy’s Mexican Restaurant, Brew City BBQ, Trinity Three Irish Pubs, The Harp Irish Pub, Oakland Trattoria, SoLo Pizza, The Black Rose Irish Pub, Monster Pizza MKE, and Vagabond, along with food and beverage operations at the Wisconsin State Fair and Summerfest. Together, these establishments formed one of Milwaukee’s most prominent hospitality groups.
In 2008, Milwaukee Downtown recognized Schmidt as a “downtown visionary” for both the scale of the company he built and his longstanding belief in downtown Milwaukee. Though he oversaw a growing collection of businesses, Schmidt remained a hands-on operator who could often be found greeting guests, checking on employees, or helping with everyday operations.
“R.C. understood that a restaurant or pub could become part of a city’s identity,” said Matt Schmidt, CEO and COO of 4th Street Management. “He believed in Milwaukee, he believed in taking care of people, and he was never above doing any job himself. The greatest measure of his success was not the number of businesses he opened, but the employees, guests and families whose lives became connected through them.”
Schmidt’s influence remains visible in the brewpub culture he helped establish, the downtown districts he helped energize and the countless careers, friendships and family traditions that began inside his establishments. His legacy will continue through the businesses he built, the people he mentored and the gathering places that remain part of Milwaukee’s identity.
Today, the Schmidt family and its leadership team continue the business R.C. began more than 50 years ago. The group operates Trinity Three Irish Pubs, The Harp Irish Pub, The Brewery, and Water Street Brewery locations in Delafield, Grafton, and Oak Creek. Through its restaurants, breweries, pubs and event spaces, the organization remains committed to carrying forward R.C. Schmidt’s tradition of creating memorable gathering places throughout southeastern Wisconsin.
