Popular Franklin fish fry destination Wegner’s St. Martins Inn (11318 W. St Martins Rd.) announced Tuesday that its final day of service will be Saturday, June 1. Why the sudden closure? Owners Dennis and Kathie Wegner are retiring.

“After almost 27 incredible years in St Martin’s the time has come for us to bid farewell to Wegner’s,” reads a social media post. “This Saturday, June 1st will be our last dinner service at the Inn. We know our goodbye is fast, but this is the right time for our future. Thankfully nothing is forcing us to make this decision other than knowing we aren’t guaranteed tomorrow and it’s time for our next step.”

According to Caleb Westphal’s 2022 fish fry article: “Dennis and Kathie Wegner opened Wegner’s St. Martins Inn in 1997. Dennis had previously been a chef at Mader’s for over two decades. Prior to Mader’s, he worked at a few other restaurants, studied under a French and German chef at MATC, and was an apprentice of an Italian chef. He got his start with food at a Marc’s Big Boy while in high school.”

Tuesday’s farewell post continues:

It has been an extraordinary journey filled with memories, stories, special occasions, and countless amazing meals. As we step into this new chapter of our lives, we want to express our deepest gratitude to our customers, employees, and supporters who have been with us every step of the way. We can’t thank you enough for your patronage and are grateful you were willing to wait for Friday Fish Frys and a special thanks to those who ate with us multiple days of the week. At this point we consider you family!

While we may be saying goodbye to our restaurant, the connection with each of you will endure. As we embark on retirement, we appreciate you for being a part of our journey.

Here’s to new beginnings!

Our deepest and sincere thanks,
Dennis and Kathie
