In October 2024, news dropped that the historic White House building at 2900 S. Kinnickinnic Ave. in Bay View was for sale. The restaurant occupying the first floor of the three-story building, SAGE, would remain open. Building and restaurant owner Allison Meinhardt told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel she would “continue to operate [SAGE] until a potential sale takes place.”
Well, even though that sale hasn’t taken place yet, SAGE is closed. According to a release, the restaurant “softly closed” this past weekend. “The owner Allison would like to thank the community for six beautiful years of service under The White House & SAGE,” the release reads.
Meinhardt purchased The White House building and opened a French restaurant of the same name there in 2019. She changed the restaurant concept to the more casual SAGE in early 2024.
The building was constructed in 1890. It operated as a tavern from 1893 until 2017.
So what’s next for the The White House? The building remains for sale (listed for $1.6 million last fall), and the first floor restaurant/bar space previously occupied by SAGE is available for lease. Like, available now.
