A new “full-service, sit-down Caribbean restaurant” called Mobay Cafe is planned for 1022 S. 1st St. in Walker’s Point. The building formerly housed Mexican restaurant Cocina 1022, which closed in February 2019. Before that, it was the longtime home of French restaurant Chez Jacques, which closed in October 2016.
City records indicate that Nadine Dixon is the sole owner of the planned restaurant. Dixon is a Milwaukee resident who lists her birthplace as Jamaica. We’ve reached out to Dixon for more information on her planned venture.
A lengthy sample menu includes dishes like jerk chicken, curry chicken, and brown stew chicken. Jerk chicken is also available in sandwich and wrap form. Other items include curried goat, oxtail, brown stew fish, grilled shrimp, Jamaican greens, and jerk salmon. Side items include banana pancakes, mac and cheese, steamed cabbage, and fried dumplings. Red Stripe, Dragon Stout, and Kalik highlight the beer selection.
Records indicate possible sidewalk dining from June through September.
Mobay Cafe’s proposed hours are 11 a.m.-9 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday; 11 a.m.-11 p.m. Friday and Saturday; 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Sunday; and closed on Monday.
A tentative opening date is listed as March 20, 2020.
