Thanks to everyone who braved the elements and navigated the flood waters in order to watch Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story with us last night. It was a great time, and we’re excited to follow it up with another star-studded cult comedy classic next month. Yep! We’re screening To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar at Avalon Theater on Wednesday, May 20. Tickets to the 7 p.m. screening are on sale NOW.
If you’re somehow unfamiliar with this iconic 1995 film that was decades ahead of its time, To Wong Foo centers around three New York drag queens—portrayed by Wesley Snipes, Patrick Swayze, and John Leguizamo—who set out on a cross-country road trip to a drag pageant in Hollywood. Along the way, they get into some trouble with the law and are forced to hide out in the small town of Snydersville. As they wait for the heat to die down, the trio strikes up unlikely bonds with residents, teaches them a few things, and learns a little something from them as well.
As if this celebrated three-hander isn’t already compelling enough, the stars get support from Stockard Channing, Jason London, Chris Penn, as well as a murders’ row of cameos from the likes of RuPaul, Robin Williams, Naomi Campbell, and even Julie Newmar herself. Speaking of support, this 7 p.m. screening is sponsored by Lakefront Brewery, Gruber Law Offices, and Skilos: A Family Pet Store. Whether you’ve never seen this groundbreaking and great drag-themed comedy/drama or you’re just itching to see it on the big screen, you should watch To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar with us at Avalon Theater on Wednesday, May 20. Get those tickets NOW!
BUT THERE’S MORE!!! Immediately after the movie, we’ll be heading over to Cactus Club for a “Post Credit” event, which will coincide with the bar/venue’s monthly Queer Karaoke. From 9-11 p.m., we’ll be there taking part in karaoke (you should too!). You can enjoy drink specials on WYNK all night and we’ll be giving away a few pairs of tickets to PrideFest, too. There’s no cover for the Post Credit event, so just stop by and hang out!
