The East Side got a shot of major league star power on Friday, when the Milwaukee Brewers unveiled a new mural of catcher William Contreras in the neighborhood’s Black Cat Alley. The anime-inspired mural was illustrated by Milwaukee native Brent Schoonover, and painted by Milwaukee artist Hannah Tews.

The Contreras mural is the third mural the Brewers have unveiled as part of their #BeyondTheDiamond community outreach program. Last year, a mural entitled “El Paletero” was installed at the Heavy Hitters Athletic Facility in Walker’s Point. It was followed by a mural entitled “Field of Play,” installed at the Little Village Play Café in Wauwatosa.

Black Cat Alley, located between Kenilworth Boulevard and Ivanhoe Place, opened in 2016. The outdoor art gallery has since become an inescapable Instagram destination, a venue for shows and events, and an occasional magnet for artistic controversy. Remember that prisoner mural? Or that “alcoholic Santa” mural? Fun times!
