Spooky season is extra spooky this year. With both Halloween and the latest Most Important Election Of Our Lifetimes right around the corner, things couldn’t be any more terrifying. So why not curl up to a zine/e-book that “takes a deep look at a relation between political parties and the genres of horror films they inspire”?
Enter Political Monsters, the latest project from Milwaukee journalist and author (and occasional Milwaukee Record contributor) Tea Krulos. The zine “explores a theory that dates back to the Obama administration that suggests that we get more vampire movies during Democratic Party administrations and more zombies during Republican ones.” Considering Krulos has previously written books about ghosts, cryptids, doomsday preppers, and conspiracy theorists, it’s about time he’s gotten around to politicians.
The zine’s description continues:
During Trump’s MAGA Party reign, journalist Tea Krulos noticed a new trend—lots of killer clown themed movies were being made, in fact the single biggest cluster of this theme in film history (vampires returned with Biden). Krulos decided to look at some data in his mad scientist lab to determine how much truth there was to this theory. Did it hold up? The answer is: for the most part, yes. The main section of Political Monsters explores the trends and data, but there’s also some bonus appendix material about the history of these genres.
You can order a print copy ($7) or an e-book version ($3.99) HERE.
Want to pick up a copy from Krulos in person? He’ll be at the Awkward Nerd Book Fair on September 22, the Milwaukee Paranormal Conference on October 19, and the official Political Monsters Party at Lion’s Tooth bookstore on October 20. The latter will feature a talk from Krulos and a round of horror film trivia. If you come dressed as a zombie, vampire, or killer clown, you’ll get a free copy of the zine!
Oh, and then a few weeks later, VOTE!
