Flat Teeth (EP release) + Versio Curs, Live Tetherball Tonight @ Cactus Club | Milwaukee | Wisconsin | United States

If the name Flat Teeth doesn’t mean anything to you, there’s a good reason for that. Though the project has been writing and rehearsing in some capacity since 2016, the unknown Milwaukee indie outfit—which features current and former members of John The Savage, Paper Holland, Queen Hilma, The Invaders, Twelve Ounce Prophet, and more in its ranks—only just started playing out, and they’ve yet to release any material. That will all change soon, though, as Flat Teeth is set to put out their debut EP on September 29.

Partway into Flat Teeth’s quiet existence, Paper Holland and Queen Hilma guitarist Andy Kosanke joined the band because he was a fan of the members’ associated acts and he thought the louder, darker material would challenge him artistically.

“Initially, I was interested because we’ve all known each other for a long time, I’m a fan of the music they’ve created in other bands, and I thought that hanging out in a basement and being loud together would be fun,” Kosanke says. “Creatively, I knew it would force me to take a different approach to playing guitar, singing, and writing, and that was all appealing to me.”

Flat Teeth’s sound will soon be on display on Winter House, a six-song EP the band will release at Cactus Club. Prior to the September 29 release show for their Winter House EP, listen to the EP’s title track now.

Following an especially long offseason, we’re proud to announce the Milwaukee Record Halftime Show concert series is coming back bigger, stronger, and in the best shape of its life for another season at Cactus Club.

This time around, Miller High Life will sponsor our football-focused festivities, meaning fans can enjoy “The Champagne Of Beers” for $2.50 a bottle or $10 for a bucket of five beers all game long. Bloody Marys will also be on special for $6. There will be a rotating lineup of food trucks and complimentary snacks on hand (feel free to bring food to share). Need more? Well, there will also be bleacher seating and the opportunity to watch Aaron Rodgers play football on two televisions. Oh, and touchdown shots.

Most importantly, like last year, we’ve assembled a stacked roster of 16 projects to provide FREE (21+) halftime entertainment. Moreover, band members (or other hand-selected people) will serve as DJs before the game and during commercials. The series will kick off with a Sunday night performance by Bad Wig, and will continue on (at least) until the regular season finale by Knaaves. Along the way, a variety of acts—including Devils Teeth, Immortal Girlfriend, Population Control, Telethon, Whips, Amanda Huff, and a super secret December 16 band—will take the stage at Cactus Club.

Football is back and so is the Milwaukee Record Halftime Show! It’s going to be awesome. Here’s the full lineup (game times subject to change):

Beet Street Harvest Festival @ Cactus Club
Oct 13 @ 12:00 pm
Beet Street Harvest Festival @ Cactus Club | Milwaukee | Wisconsin | United States

The city will officially be festing into fall with Beet Street Harvest Festival. Rain put a damper on last year’s festivities, but Goodkind, Palomino, and Cactus Club thankfully decided to press on for a third installment.

Join the trio of Bay View businesses on Saturday, October 13 for a day of food, drinks, live music, baking competitions, an urban pumpkin patch, and festival fun for all ages. A chunk of Wentworth Avenue between Goodkind and Cactus Club will be blocked off for the occasion. In addition to the music outside, Cactus Club will offer local and nationally-noted talent all afternoon long, followed by a 21+ after party. Goodkind will be open for brunch. As always, Palomino will host the Great Midwestern Pie Championship.

The harvest festival will also have a beneficial and community-focused angle, as groups like Sixteenth Street Community Health Clinic, LSS Refugee Resettlement, Girls Rock Camp and The New State will be on hand to inform and engage visitors with a variety of activities. Local restaurants and farmers will sell food and produce. Great Lakes Distillery cocktails, cider, Red Bull bombs, and a variety of Pabst Milwaukee Brewery beers (yes, including PBR) will be available.

Of course, it wouldn’t be a block party without tons of music. This year’s list of performers is the most eclectic lineup yet. Afrofuturistic indie duo OSHUN will headline the outdoor stage. Inside, Cactus Club will feature the likes of Oozing Wound, Zed Kenzo, Slow Walker, Dog In Ecstasy, and more over the course of the day. Here’s the full lineup.

Milwaukee Record presents ‘Dead Alive’ @ Avalon Theater
Oct 17 @ 7:00 pm
Milwaukee Record presents 'Dead Alive' @ Avalon Theater | Milwaukee | Wisconsin | United States

Do you like movies with goofy, over-the-top gore? Do you like movies with lots of goofy, over-the-top gore? Do you like movies with tons of goofy, over-the-top gore? Then you’re in luck, because on Wednesday, October 17, at Avalon Theater, we’re screening Peter Jackson’s 1992 comedy horror classic Dead Alive (a.k.a. Braindead). Tickets to the 7 p.m. show are $5. Kick ass for the Lord and buy yours here.

Roughly a decade before Jackson would helm the landmark Lord Of The Rings trilogy, the New Zealand filmmaker was gleefully shocking audiences with his tale of star-crossed lovers, rabid rat-monkeys, unquenchable zombies, some series mother-son issues, ass-kicking priests (“Stand back boy! This calls for divine intervention!”), and enough practical gore effects to make the Evil Dead movies look like a season of The Golden Girls. Similar to the Evil Dead franchise, Dead Alive has its tongue firmly in cheek; scenes of our hero Lionel wrestling with his mother’s zombified corpse, beating up a zombified baby, and mowing down dozens of zombies with a literal lawn mower are so outrageous that it’s impossible not to scream and laugh. Jackson is having a ton of fun here, and watching him cheerily throw all sense of good taste out the window (and then inject it with poison in hopes of killing it but oh god it’s only made it stronger!) is equally fun.

Again, get your tickets here. Our friends at Lakefront Brewery will have their coffee-flavored Fuel Cafe stout on tap for the occasion (“Rich and creamy, just the way I like it!”), and since the screening is close to Halloween, dressing up might be fun, too. See you at the party!

Doomsday @ Fuel Cafe 5th Street | Milwaukee | Wisconsin | United States

On Saturday, October 27, Fuel Cafe and Lakefront Brewery will celebrate 20 years of collaboration by partnering once more on a block party and a limited-release variant of the iconic Fuel Cafe stout. From noon to 6 p.m., a festival called Doomsday will bring food, band, vendors, and a “post-apocalyptic, chaotic Halloween party” to a portion of 5th Street outside the new Fuel location. A brutal batch of bands—including Northless, Moon Curse, Cashfire Sunset, Tan, and more TBA—will provide the afternoon’s soundtrack.

If the ability to enjoy one last festival well into autumn isn’t enough for you, perhaps the opportunity to try the ultra-rare Doomsday beer will bring you out. The bourbon barrel-aged Fuel Cafe Imperial Stout clocks in at a sturdy 11.5 percent ABV, and will ONLY be available at this event. Once it’s gone, it’s gone. Lakefront will also have other limited drafts and firkins available.

Milwaukee Record presents ‘Idiocracy’ @ Avalon Theater

Milwaukee Record presents 'Idiocracy' @ Avalon Theater | Milwaukee | Wisconsin | United States

Could you ever envision a time in which an unqualified, temperamental President and his inept cabinet “lead” an advertising-laden nation, whose listless populace derives entertainment from watching people injure each other on television? Mike Judge certainly could, as evidenced in his 2006 cult comedy hit, Idiocracy. In the years since the film’s release, Idocracy went from being the writer and director’s exaggerated satirical view of what society might be like 500 years in the future to a hauntingly accurate portrayal of what life is like today. Sometimes the similarities between Idiocracy and reality are so close that you have to laugh, which is exactly what we’ll do when we screen the film on Election Night.

Join us at Avalon Theater on Tuesday, November 6 for an extra special Election Night screening of the underappreciated comedy-turned-documentary. The Judge-directed feature stars Luke Wilson as an “average American,” who wakes up in the year 2,505 as a result of a military experiment mishap. As he navigates his way through the dumb new world, he encounters a zany cast of characters and soon realizes he’s now the smartest man in the world. The film also features Maya Rudolph, Dax Shepard, Justin Long, Stephen Root, and an unforgettable performance by Terry Crews.

Tickets to the 7 p.m. screening cost $5. There’s also a $10 “Thirst Mutilator” package that includes a movie ticket, a Milwaukee Record flag sticker, and a pint of a limited “Brawndo” beer variant that Lakefront Brewery will make for the occasion. It’s got what plants crave! Whether you’re celebrating your preferred candidate’s victory or mourning society’s continued descent, you won’t want to miss this Election Night screening. And besides, you can always record Ow My Balls! to watch later.
