Remember the early days of the COVID-19 crisis? When we all came to the aid of dozens of Milwaukee businesses (including Milwaukee Record—THANK YOU) and donated to dozens of GoFundMe campaigns? Seems like a lifetime ago, doesn’t it? Well, the awfulness of 2020 is far from over, and 2021 ain’t looking so hot, either. Thus, there’s another Milwaukee institution to support: Mad Planet (533 E. Center St.)
“Mad Planet needs your help, we are unable to re-open because of the nature of our business, a dance club,” a recently created GoFundMe page reads. “We re-opened for 2 weeks in June and quickly realized that dancing in close proximity is not something that most people are currently interested in, so we have decided to close until sometime in 2021.”
It continues:
This was not an easy decision to make, but we need to protect our patrons and our employees. We plan to re-open when the infection rates are down to almost nothing, or when a vaccine is widely available. We have powered down everything that we can and cut our expenses down to a minimum, just maintaining the minimum still costs money. If you are able to make a contribution, we would be most grateful and it will go a long way to opening the doors (and dance floors) next year. Thank you for all of your continued support.
Do we want to imagine a Milwaukee without Mad Planet? No we do not. Help by donating HERE.
(Obligatory video of the time Arcade Fire played Mad Planet in 2004 and my old band, Holy Mary Motor Club, totally opened.)
