Body Futures’ 2014 album Brand New Silhouettes was the sound of a band making music simply for the sake of making music. Populated by scene stalwarts like Dixie Jacobs (former White, Wrench, Conservatory) and husband D.J. Hostettler (IfIHadAHiFi, occasional Milwaukee Record contributor), the group clearly had nothing to prove with its unapologetic and trend-free sound. No gimmicks or radio-pandering singles were needed—this was straight-up, hooky, occasionally-jagged-but-always-tuneful rock and roll.
Body Futures’ just-released video for standout Silhouettes track “A Complete Divorce,” however, is a different story. It’s a shot-for-shot homage to the video for ABBA’s “The Winner Takes It All”—which, let’s be honest, isn’t something you see every day. Directed by Ashley Altadonna (a one-time Milwaukee Record contributor), the clip takes plenty of inspiration from the Swedish band’s yearning 1980 video: the opening black-and-white slideshow, some contemplative waterfront strolling, plenty of soft focus. Just think: If ABBA had included an autoharp and more scenes set at The Vanguard and Cactus Club in their video, it would be a Milwaukee classic to this day.
