Some Milwaukee things come and go, while some become icons. Mandatory Milwaukee is all about the latter. We’re bending the Mandatory Milwaukee format a little bit this time around to focus on some local burger deals.

If there’s anything Milwaukeeans love more than a good burger, it’s a good deal. And when said deal is a deep discount on a tasty burger, it’s even better! Fitting very much into the demographic of value-conscious and burger-loving Milwaukee residents, I’ve made a point to keep tabs on local promotions in order to put together a list of some of my favorite burger-based specials in the city. Here are eight of my personal favorite ways to get your burger fix in Milwaukee without breaking the bank.

Camino

Camino’s $5 Monday Burger Special could arguably be considered Milwaukee’s version of Costco’s $1.50 hot dog and soda meal deal or the unflappable 99-cent price that’s still emblazoned on cans of Arizona Iced Tea. Despite the offer being introduced during the Obama administration, this Milwaukee bar with a comfort food focus has held pat on its patty price each and every Monday.

Yes, on Mondays from Camino’s 11 a.m. open until 11 p.m. (or 10 p.m. at its West Allis location), both establishments offer cheeseburgers for just $5. The burgers consist of an eight-ounce Wisconsin beef patty cooked however you’d like it, two slices of melted American cheese, grilled onions, and a pickle slice on a brioche bun. Additional toppings can be added for an extra charge. Diners can add their own ketchup and mustard. The special is dine-in only.

Crafty Cow

Whether you live in Wauwatosa, Oconomowoc, or Milwaukee proper, Crafty Cow has you covered when it comes to tasty burgers, excellent chicken sandwiches, and “viral” Caesar wraps. On Wednesday nights, you can get a couple of those things for just $6. Every hump day from 5 p.m. to close, it’s “Sandwich Night” at all three Crafty Cow locations. That weekly dine-in only special offers a deep discount on Crafty’s popular Oklahoma-style smash burger that consists of a smash patty, fried onions, and melted American cheese. Ketchup and mustard are on hand courtesy of Crafty Cow, and a ton of other toppings (or a second patty) can be added for an additional charge.

Nashville North

Nashville North wears a lot of different hats. The Brady Street haunt is a music venue, a lively bar, and a restaurant that has some crazy good specials. In addition to recurring offers on all you can drink tap beer and dollar Dr. McGillicudy’s shots and bombs during specific time frames each week, Nashville North also fries up downright affordable smash burgers every weekend.

From noon to 4 p.m. most Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, customers can get a $2 single smash, $4 doubles, and $6 triples. That price includes the buttered/grilled hard roll, meat, and cheese (choice of American, cheddar, and Swiss). Bottles of ketchup and yellow mustard are on hand to dress up burgers for no extra charge, and additional toppings—including lettuce, tomato, pickles, and raw or grilled onions—can be added for an additional 50 cents apiece. Sure, it’s a no-frills and workmanlike burger, but the patty is noticeably larger than you’d expect and it more than does the job for a burger you can order and customize to your liking for a few bucks. Dine-in only and a beverage purchase is required.

Nite Owl Drive In

Unlike the majority of these other burgers featured, which are decidedly “special” offerings that are only available certain days of the week or with topping limitations, the cheeseburger at Nite Owl Drive In cracks this list because it’s just plain cheap. For under $8, you can get one of the city’s best cheeseburgers, which features a massive hunk of beef, a laughable stack of American cheese slices, and your choice of toppings (such as the pickles, lettuce, tomatoes, ketchup, mustard, and grilled onion you see above) that are always piled on high. The only fine print here is Nite Owl is typically closed between early November and late March, when they’re open between early spring and mid-autumn, the business’ hours of operation are 11 a.m. until they run out of meat for the day (typically before 2 p.m.). Oh, and it’s cash only.

O.G. Pub & Grille

O.G. Pub & Grille is the newest place on this list. The bar and restaurant, which opened on the East Side last November in the short-lived site or The Original and the longtime home of Red Dot, recently debuted one heck of a Monday burger special. All night long, O.G. starts the work week strong by offering a $5 smash burger special that consists of one quarter pound smash patty, a pile sauteed onions and jalapenos, melted American cheese, and a zesty O.G. Sauce betwixt pieces of buttered and grilled brioche bun. Dine-in only. If you’re feeling extra hungry, you can also get $2 off double O.G. Smash Burger meals every Monday. It’s worth mentioning the hand-cut seasoned fries at O.G. are super good, too!

Oscar’s Pub & Grill / Oscar’s Winner’s Circle

As if it wasn’t already enticing enough for Oscar’s Pub & Grill and its affiliated Oscar’s Winner’s Circle to offer easily one of the city’s best burgers (The Big “O”) daily and delicious dollar tacos on Tuesdays, the beloved burger purveyor unveiled its own Monday burger special earlier this year. To the surprise of exactly nobody’s, it’s awesome. All day and night every Monday, both Oscar’s locations serve up $5 burgers that feature two beef patties grilled with onions, topped with American cheese and special sauce, and placed on a lightly grilled potato roll bun. It comes with a pickle medallion, and customers can add their own ketchup and mustard for no additional charge. Dine-in only.

Pete’s Pub

Weekdays from 2-6 p.m., you can get a Simple Smash Burger at Pete’s Pub on Brady Street for a scant $5. “Simple” is the operative term here, as it is just a single American cheese-covered beef patty on a soft brioche bun with a side of ketchup and a pickle spear. Basic as it might be, it’s still very good…especially for that price. That being said, maybe plan on a side—we strongly suggest some of Pete’s top-notch wings—when taking advantage of this special or perhaps ordering two smashes. Dine-in only.

Saint Bibiana

Believe it or not, Saint Bibiana on Brady Street is home to one of my top-10 Milwaukee burgers. I was surprised as you are! If you want a taste of the outstanding Bibiana Burger, but lack the appetite and/or the funds for that double-stacked original, you can get a smaller variation for a modest price every weekday happy hour. From 4-6 p.m. Mondays through Fridays, a single-patty take on the Bibiana Burger—which includes American cheese, grilled onions, pickles, and Saint Sauce on a sesame seed bun—runs just $6. It’s not huge, but it’s damn tasty and you can supplement it with a $3 side of fries or other “Saint Square” offerings at happy hour prices to fill out the meal at a bargain.

This list if far from being complete. These are MY favorites, and I know there are likely some gaps. For example, I’ve still yet to partake in the 99-cent Wednesday night burger deal at Don’s TV & Repair, the $6 Burger Au Poivre served (while supplies last) at Third Coast Provisions starting at 4 p.m. Tuesdays through Fridays, and countless other cheap burger deals out in the suburbs.
