Imagine, if you can, a bleak and dystopian version of the world in the mid-2020s in which violence and division run rampant. Inhumane and deplorable immigration policies enacted by a totalitarian government are commonplace. Having faced decades of war, pollution, and pandemics, humanity has essentially lost all hope. And with no new births in 27 years, civilization is quite literally facing extinction. While that all sounds eerily similar to our world today (except with a slight infertility twist), it’s also the plot of Children Of Men, which we’re screening at Avalon Theater on Wednesday, January 21.

The prescient 2006 Alfonso Cuarón-written and -directed masterpiece stars Clive Owen as Theo, a nihilistic and broken civil servant called upon by some old acquaintances to protect a young refugee (Clare-Hope Ashitey) whose safekeeping has untold society-saving implications. The film—which has been called one of this abbreviated century’s best by Rolling StoneTimeThe Ringer, and numerous other outlets—also features Julianne Moore, Michael Caine, Charlie Hunnam, and Chiwetel Umeadi Ejiofor.

Tickets for this special Milwaukee Record screening are $11. As always, the 7 p.m. showing is sponsored by our friends at Lakefront Brewery, Gruber Law Offices, and Skilos: A Family Pet Store. Even though this one is far from our most uplifting selection, it’s still an outstanding movie we’re almost certain you didn’t get to see on the big screen during its limited theatrical run 20 years ago. So get yourself in the headspace to watch Children Of Men with us at Avalon Theater on Wednesday, January 21. If you can’t get off work, consider telling your boss you’re sad about Baby Diego.
