Milwaukee Record is working in partnership with Urban Cat Coalition to help find loving homes for area cats. Each week, we—with generous sponsorship from Skilos, A Family Pet Store—plan to highlight a feline friend that’s currently up for adoption by naming it “Milwaukee Record’s Cat Of The Week.” This week: a cross-eyed cutie called Mackerel.

Mackerel is a sweet, slightly silly boy who has grown into his handsome self with a little help from foster care, tasty treats, and lots of love. He’s a gentle soul with a quirky charm. His adorably cross-eyed gaze will melt your heart. And don’t worry, he sees just fine—especially when there’s chicken involved.

This helpful little guy takes his duties seriously, assisting with the all-important task of selecting wet food for his foster siblings. Though he watches his figure and doesn’t overindulge, his greatest weakness is tiny bits of chicken, which he politely accepts with his front teeth like a proper gentleman.

Mackerel’s affection comes with a side of independence. He’s a connoisseur of blanket naps and TV time snuggles, but when he’s feeling a little aloof, he’ll maintain a very precise 1.5-foot buffer zone. Give him time to trust you, and he’ll reward you with cheek scritches, ear nuzzles, and bird-like chirps that are way cuter than a typical meow. He’s also a total goofball when catnip enters the picture and he loves a good stick toy session.

This little guy would thrive in a quiet, patient home with someone who appreciates the slow bloom of a special bond. Once you’re in his inner circle, you’ll have a snuggly, silly, cross-eyed companion for life.
