You know those bridges that split in the middle and both sides go up to allow boats to pass? Those are called “bascule bridges,” apparently. Neat! Oh, and a few Milwaukee bascule bridges will soon be undergoing maintenance, closing the surrounding streets.
“The City of Milwaukee is performing maintenance on the bridge center lock system of several bascule bridges in the coming weeks to maintain proper operation of the equipment and reduce bounce between the two bascule leaves at the center of the bridge,” reads a press release from the Department of Public Works. “The work will be performed from a barge on the river with the street closed to traffic to ensure that the components are properly aligned.”
