Some Milwaukee things come and go while some become icons. Mandatory Milwaukee is all about the latter. This week: not spreading unsourced, unverified misinformation online
You know that whole “My uncle works at Nintendo” thing? As in, “I’m sharing a wild and unlikely rumor about Nintendo—a new game, a new system, etc.—and when pressed for my source I’m going to say my uncle works at Nintendo”? As in, “I don’t really have an uncle who works at Nintendo and I’m completely full of shit”? Yeah, that.
Anyway, here’s a message from local immigrant rights organization Voces de la Frontera, released on Monday:
Dear community, we need to clear up some recent rumors. Voces de la Frontera (which includes Comité Sin Fronteras) can say with 100% confidence that as of today, Monday, January 26, ICE is not “occupying hotel rooms in downtown Milwaukee / Hilton hotels” *nor in Racine* and there is no community alert at this time.
If you see ICE or have something to report, please use the hotline at 1-800-427-0213. False information spreads quickly on social media and we ask for your help in keeping the community informed and safe.
So yeah, don’t spread unsourced, unverified misinformation online. Thank you.
