PLANNED PARENTHOOD ADVOCATES OF WISCONSIN STATEMENT ON THE 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF ROE V. WADE

WISCONSIN—January, 20,2023—The following is a statement from Tanya Atkinson, president of Planned Parenthood Advocates of Wisconsin on the 50th Anniversary of the Roe vs. Wade Decision.

“As we embark on the 50th anniversary of Roe v Wade, we are reminded of its significance and what has been lost. This year’s anniversary will weigh heavy on many of us because of what was taken away last summer when the Supreme Court erased five decades of legal precedent—taking away our power to make personal medical decisions—and handing that power to politicians. However, still, we are galvanized by the hope and possibilities of what we can gain, knowing that the people of Wisconsin believe everyone should have the freedom to control their bodies and lives.

“Deciding if or when to become a parent is one of the most personal, life-changing decisions a person can make. That is why this moment is so difficult. Most of us can agree that we want our friends and family to receive the care they need when they need it.

“While we will continue to fight and advocate for the restoration of reproductive freedom, we will also fight to gain improved health care access for marginalized communities, which was still a challenge before the overruling. It’s time to move away from abortion bans and toward programs that improve health equity, address health disparities and improve health outcomes.

“Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin health center doors remain open, and we won’t stop until everyone has access to the sexual and reproductive health care they need to control their bodies, lives, and futures.”
