Our fat-free, dolphin-safe Milwaukee calendar is chock-full of things to do, but only a handful of events contained therein are worthy of the lofty “Record Recommended” (patent pending) honor. Here are our recommendations for the week of January 11-17, 2016.

Thursday, January 14

414 Music Live: Twin Brother @ 88Nine Radio Milwaukee
Yeah, you’re going to be seeing the words “Local Coverage” a lot in this week’s Record Recommended. So sue us. Anyway, what better way to prepare for Friday’s LOCAL COVERAGE show at Turner Hall than by stopping by 88Nine Radio Milwaukee the day before and enjoying a preview set courtesy of performer Twin Brother? TB will play some originals during the station’s weekly (and free) 414 Music Live show, as well as a song or two from Klassik, whom Twin Brother is covering.

Living Colour @ Northern Lights Theater

Milwaukee Record Presents: Local Coverage @ Turner Hall
Call us biased, but Local Coverage is our favorite show of the year. On Friday, January 15, an eclectic and talented group of 10 Milwaukee bands and rappers will take the stage at Turner Hall Ballroom to perform 15-minute sets of another local act’s material. We’re beyond excited to see how Klassik adapts Decibully’s songs, the way The Whiskeybelles will country up Fox Face’s two-minute punk numbers, GGOOLLDD’s take on Maritime’s music, and how each of the other seven acts will approach the band they drafted. Join us for what’s sure to be an unforgettable night of unique entertainment that you’ll never be able to witness again. All profits will be split evenly between Girls Rock Milwaukee and Guest House Of Milwaukee. Avoid lines at the box office and buy your ticket now.

BLAX + Scallops Hotel, Stumblesome, Mike Regal @ Company Brewing
Though we’re partial to a different January 15 event, we simply can’t go without mentioning this outstanding grouping of rappers taking the stage at Company Brewing. His recent “Headphone Experiment” tracks show an especially motivated and poised BLAX. Rory Ferreira will set aside his Milo catalog for a night in favor of his Scallops Hotel alter-ego. WC Tank’s Stumblesome project and Mike Regal will also perform. Good news: You can totally make it to this show after Local Coverage ends.

Dave Coulier @ Northern Lights Theater
While you probably know him better from Full House, (allegedly) the pointed lyrics of Alanis Morissette’s “You Oughta Know,” and that Tumblr page where somebody posts the same picture of him every day, Dave Coulier has made a steady post-sitcom living as a stand-up comedian. The actor/comic/impressionist brings his time-tested and quasi-clean comedy to the casino for an evening of nostalgic laughs. Cut it out.

The Young Revelators (record release) + Cherryball @ Linneman’s

Saturday, January 16

Gabriel Sanchez + Ordinary Heathens @ Turner Hall
If there’s a better Prince tribute act than Gabriel Sanchez And The Prince Experience, we’re not aware of it. But what’s this? The multi-talented Sanchez is playing behind an album of non-Prince material? Yep. Tonight, the Purple One proxy celebrates the release of Immortal By Sound, an album of all original materiel. Expect a Prince-esque stage show, however, with plenty of lights and video accompaniment for each song.

Also: Dr. Chow’s Love Medicine (record release) + Floor Model @ Linneman’s

Patti LaBelle @ Riverside Theater
