Drop the coin right into the slot / You gotta hear something that’s really hot

Developed during the first part of the twentieth century, and originally known as “automatic phonographs,” jukeboxes came into their own in the mid-1930s. With the repeal of Prohibition in 1933, jukeboxes found new homes in taverns, and continued to rise in popularity despite the lingering Great Depression. Four brands dominated the market: Wurlitzer, Seeburg, Rock-Ola, and AMI.

World War II put a pause on jukeboxes, but with the return to normalcy following the war, they came back stronger and flashier than ever. In 1946, Wurlitzer introduced the 1015, known as “the bubbler.” Seeburg released the M100A Select-O-Matic in 1949, the first jukebox that could play 100 selections. The following year, Seeburg’s M100B became the first jukebox to use 45 RPM records—up until that time, 78 RPM records had lined jukeboxes.

In the 1950s, jukeboxes continued to dominate. Not only were they played in taverns, but with the emergence of rock ‘n’ roll, they were plugged by teenagers in diners and soda fountains. Jukeboxes waned in the 1960s due to numerous factors, such as the rise in opportunities to see live music and listen to DJs at clubs, the proliferation of transistor radios, and the continued popularity of television. Still, jukeboxes hung on, even if they didn’t retain the cultural clout they once had. In the late 1980s, they shifted their format to compact discs, which became the norm in the 1990s and into the 2000s. Today, most times when you see a jukebox, which is usually in a bar, it is an internet jukebox.

With this project, I wanted to document the record and CD jukeboxes of Milwaukee. Where do these jukeboxes still exist? Do the songs of a jukebox tell a story about the place in which the jukebox is located? Are the music choices personalized and handpicked, or completely random? Do the selections steer towards nostalgia, the current hits of today, or eclectic, local, and independent music?

The following jukeboxes are in no way meant to be a definitive list of all the CD and record jukeboxes in Milwaukee—there are many more that exist. This is a starting point, a Side A if you will. (See below for full lists of records.)

The Standard (1734 N. Franklin Pl.)
Brand: Rowe AMI
Model: LaserStar Nostalgia
Year: Model went into production in 1988—this version is 1993 or newer

Year: 1959
Format: 45
Capacity: 80 records (160 selections)
Price: One song for a dime, four songs for a quarter, nine songs for a half dollar
Story: I was told it has been there for a long time and has also been broken for a long time. It currently has “Out of Order” taped on it.

Toni’s Moody Blues (2813 S. Howell Ave.)
Brand: Rowe AMI
Model: LaserStar Saturn II
Year: 2000
Format: CD
Capacity: 100
Price: Two songs for a dollar, seven songs for two dollars, 18 songs for five dollars
Story: Toni said she’s had the jukebox since she opened 17 years ago and has no interest in getting an internet jukebox

Hi-Fi Cafe (2640 S. Kinnickinnic Ave.)
Brand: Rowe AMI
Model: R-81 Laser Blue
Year: 1977
Format: 45
Capacity: 100 records (200 selections)
Price: One song for a quarter, two songs for 50 cents, four songs for 75 cents, seven songs for a dollar
Story: It currently is out of order, and has been since sometime last year. I was told it has a broken flywheel and they hope to get it repaired soon.

Gee Willickers (2578 N. Dousman St.)
Brand: Rowe AMI
Model: LaserStar 100C – Americana
Year: 1992
Format: CD
Capacity: 100
Price: Four songs for a dollar, nine songs for two dollars, 20 songs for five dollars
Story: The jukebox was curated by bar owner Randy Langlois, who passed away shortly before I stopped in. The CDs on the jukebox are mainly mix CDs, and run the gamut of genres. A few of the mix CDs have been titled, such as “Welcome to Randy’s House of Best Jams,” “L+P 2018 Engagement Mix,” and “Happy Birthday 2002 From Barb and Louie Celleen.” Some of the mix CDs have many artists on them, while some have only two or three artists. If a CD has only two or three artists, I listed all the artists on the CD; if there are many artists on a CD, I listed only an arbitrary sampling of them.

Falcon Bowl (801 E. Clarke St.)
Brand: Rowe AMI
Model: LaserStar 100D – Black Magic
Year: 1994
Format: CD
Capacity: 100
Price: three songs for a dollar, seven songs for two dollars, 18 plays for five dollars

Two (718 E. Burleigh St.)
Brand: NSM
Model: Cosmic Burst
Year: 2000
Format: CD
Capacity: 100

Circle-A Cafe (932 E. Chambers St.)
Brand: Seeburg
Model: USC1 – Bandshell
Year: 1971
Format: 45
Capacity: 80 records (160 selections)
Price: two songs for a quarter, five songs for 50 cents, 10 songs for a dollar
Story: I was told they’ve had it for years and whenever they have any problems with it they call up the guy they bought it from and he tells them over the phone what to do to get it working properly. Circle-A is only open on the weekends, and they usually have live bands starting at 8 followed by DJs at 10, so there is limited time to use the jukebox. A few title strips on the jukebox say “Guess This Artist and Win A Drink!!” Don’t even think about using your Shazam app.
