Tonight is the night! Following months of planning and preparation, Local Coverage will take over Turner Hall Ballroom for another evening of fun philanthropy. If you’re unfamiliar with our annual benefit concert (and you haven’t read this helpful guide yet), the event features an eclectic mix of Milwaukee acts playing material from another Milwaukee artist they selected the previous fall. The final product of this unconventional cover show always ends up being equal parts unexpected and impressive. Plus, all proceeds from the event are donated to Milwaukee Women’s Center.

Among the most intriguing pairings from this year’s show—and the grouping we decided to save to close out the concert—is Fat Wreck Chords punk phenoms Direct Hit! adapting the traditional and emotional folk stylings of Nickel&Rose. In order to get people ready for Local Coverage and to give listeners an idea of what the band has been working on since drafting Nickel&Rose back in October, Direct Hit! went the extra mile and recorded a few covers this week.

Recorded by Joe Samara at the soon-to-be-opened X-Ray Arcade, Direct Hit! rearranged two tracks from last year’s Nickel&Rose EP, Americana, and one song from their Oh Sweet Love. You can hear the punk-tinged renditions of the duo’s material below and download it on Bandcamp for $5. Direct Hit! will donate all profits from the digital release to Milwaukee Women’s Center.

You can see Direct Hit! cover Nickel&Rose and watch five other Milwaukee acts perform amazing cover sets of one another’s material tonight (January 18) at Turner Hall Ballroom. Tickets are $12 and doors open at 6:30 p.m. (show at 7:30 p.m. sharp!). If these songs are any indication of what to expect, it’s going to be incredible.
