It’s been a minute since we last heard from Milwaukee’s Brat Sounds—and an even longer minute since the release of the band’s excellent 2015 album Born Loser. So what has former Dinny Bulca singer Scott Cary been up to lately? Quite a lot, actually. In between shows with the full Brat Sounds lineup, Cary spent the past summer installing a soundproofed recording studio in his basement. It’s all in anticipation of a new Brat Sounds album that Carey promises will be “a collaborative effort with the whole band rather than a solo project.” Consider us intrigued.
Until then, though, Brat Sounds is gifting Milwaukee a spiffy new video for Born Loser‘s title track (the second part of the title track, to be exact). Shot in the filmmaking facilities of UWM—as well as Center Court in Waukesha—the “Born Loser Pt. II” clip is a handsome, moody, and downright seizure-inducing experiment in voyeurism, male/female identity, and vaguely unnerving middle-distance shots of janitors. Cary and Martin Kaszubowski co-directed the video, while Kevin Leach contributed lighting and camera work. (All three previously worked together on the 2016 Milwaukee Film Festival selection Christopher Darling.)
“WARNING,” the video’s description proclaims. “This video may potentially trigger seizures for people with photosensitive epilepsy. Viewer discretion is advised.” Co-signed.
