We have some terrible news for lovers of amazing sandwiches.

A recent visit—or attempted visit, rather—to Pho Hai Tuyet resulted in the unfortunate discovery that the restaurant has closed. The airport-adjacent Vietnamese joint (located at 204 W. Layton Ave.) offered a wide variety of pho and other noodle specialties, rice dishes, seafood, and Korean-style ribs. The main draw, however, was the Banh Mi Thit Nuong, an astounding charred pork delicacy that was a $9 piece of heaven. Early last year, we declared it to be one of the best sandwiches we’ve ever eaten.

Despite its excellent sandwich that inspired countless carryout orders and earned acclaim from some in the local culinary community, the oft-empty establishment simply couldn’t stay afloat. Sadly, it appears that Pho Hai Tuyet’s second location (333 W. Brown Deer Rd., Bayside) is also permanently closed.

Farewell, Pho Hai Tuyet. On a personal note, we’re currently seeking recommendations for the best remaining places to get a banh mi in and around Milwaukee.
