It’s official: State, county, city proclaim March 7 to be Friday Fish Fry Day Milwaukee Record Staff March 6, 2025 It could be said that every Friday is Friday Fish Fry Day in Wisconsin. It could also be said that, thanks to our weekly Enjoy Every Fish Fry column, every Friday is Friday Fish Fry Day at Milwaukee Record. So with all that fish fry love swimming about, why not go ahead and make it official? That’s just what the writer behind Enjoy Every Fish Fry, Caleb Westphal, has done. Thanks to Westphal’s dedication to all things fish (he hasn’t missed a Friday fish fry in 12 years), Governor Tony Evers, County Executive David Crowley, and Mayor Cavalier Johnson have all issued proclamations making Friday, March 7 Friday Fish Fry Day in Wisconsin, Milwaukee County, and the City of Milwaukee, respectively. Seriously! Here’s the proof! For Westphal, making Friday Fish Fry Day an official state, county, and city “day” isn’t just for laughs. Westphal hopes the day will inspire folks to not only go out and get some fish, but to help out the folks who can’t. “For this year’s celebration I had two main goals: to hold a public event and to once again support an organization that helps those facing hunger,” he says. “Things have come together on both fronts. The official Friday Fish Fry Day Afterparty is taking place at Third Space Brewing, and it has the goal of raising funds and accepting food donations for Interchange Food Pantry.” The afterparty is set for 6-10 p.m. Third Space will serve up its vast arsenal of tasty brews, including its Pretty Good amber it’s dubbed “The Official Beer Of Friday Fish Fry.” Meanwhile, Interchange will accept donations of peanut butter, fruits and vegetables (both canned and fresh), and money. Those who donate will get a wristband good for discounted beer throughout the night. Frida’s Cocina will be parked outside the brewery and will sell its excellent Mexican fare, including its delicious fish tacos. Finally, both Westphal and Milwaukee Record co-founder/co-editor Tyler Maas will spin 45s from a wide variety of genres and eras. “Eating a fish fry every Friday isn’t something I take for granted, and I’m well aware that food insecurity is real and something people in our state, county, and city face,” Westphal says. “I want more than to have created another meaningless holiday, or one that celebrates gluttony, and instead want to use Friday Fish Fry Day as a means to not only celebrate the state’s Friday fish fry culture, but to raise awareness and give back, by supporting those whose concern might be less about where they are getting their weekly fish fry, and more about where they will be getting basic food staples to feed their families.” Those who can’t make it to the afterparty can donate to Interchange online HERE. For everyone else, see you at Third Space! And happy Friday Fish Fry Day, Wisconsin, Milwaukee County, and Milwaukee! Like the man says, enjoy every single one! Want more Milwaukee Record?
