Here’s a positive Friday afternoon news drop for a change. Flor de Piña Mexican Restaurant (4125 S. Howell Ave., 414-226-5498) is officially open for business. The Garden District establishment’s owners first announced its presence last May when they started painting the exterior of the building that previously housed Iron Grate BBQ and was most recently home to Hot Dish Pantry. On Tuesday, May 5, the new tenant quietly opened to the public at long last.

While the incoming eatery has big shoes to fill based on its predecessors, their so-called “Start up Menu” offers a small-yet-stunning list of specialties like chilaquiles, tlayuda, and flautas. The a la carte options include favorites like tacos, tortas, chimichangas, and burritos. Both sweet and savory snacks are present in the form of eltoes, chicarrónes, mangonadas, mini pancakes, and more. In terms of drinks, you can enjoy a wide variety of soft drinks (including Mexican specialties), cantina cocktail classics, and an array of both domestic and imported beer.

Beyond the modest dining room at the counter service restaurant, Flor de Piña also has some patio seating, and has also installed a connected exterior bar at the northwest end of the building. We’re told the business’ hours will be noon to 10 p.m. daily (excluding Monday, when they’ll be closed for the time being) early on, but they plan to expand hours eventually.

Stay tuned for a possible review in the near future. Or just stop in yourself because Flor de Piña is officially open at long last!
