Last month we told you there’s never been a more important time to get out and support Silver City businesses. Why? Because National Avenue is in the midst of a massive, multi-year reconstruction project, and businesses along that Silver City thoroughfare are suffering because of it.
Want to support a Silver City business that has really been suffering? Not only has 38th Street Mart / Silver City Smoke Shop (3745 – 3749 W. National Ave.) been dealing with construction, the dual business has recently been broken into not once, but twice—first on July 10, and again on July 25. A GoFundMe has been set up to help owner Jessica Jimenez recoup some of her losses.
“Jessica is a hardworking small business owner who has spent years serving the community,” says Jimenez’s cousin Josue Peralta, who set up the GoFundMe. “Her businesses are a small, woman-owned operation, and like many local businesses, every sale makes a real difference.”
Peralta continues:
Despite the break-ins, closures, stolen inventory, and lost revenue, Jessica has continued paying her employee. She understands that this situation affects more than just her own livelihood, and she has done her best to support the person who depends on the business for income.
We are hoping to raise $6,000 to help cover the losses, replace stolen inventory, repair the damage, recover some of the lost revenue, and help Jessica continue supporting her employee while the businesses recover.
In a story from TMJ4, Jimenez says the National Avenue construction has created an environment ripe for break-ins:
“Mainly because of construction, they’re finding these opportunities where it’s a quiet dead zone around here,” she said. “It gives people time and privacy. They’re not worried about anyone walking past because it’s not walkable at the moment.”
