There are a few things to know about Old Guard Games. One, it’s a new independent tabletop gaming store located at 3132 N. Downer Ave., just across the street from UWM. Two, while it does carry some board games like Catan and Terraforming Mars, and stock Magic: The Gathering and Pokémon cards, it’s mainly focused on miniature-based wargames like Warhammer 40K and Star Wars: X-Wing. Three, owner Ben Checota has spared no expense, decking out the 4,000-square-foot first-floor retail space (formerly a long-closed college bookstore) with paintings, shields, full suits of armor, and more; and filling the 3,000-square-foot basement with oodles of tables for in-person game sessions.

Oh, and four, it absolutely rules. This is a wonderfully old-school gaming store, the likes of which the Milwaukee area hasn’t seen since Napoleon’s closed in 2005. We checked out Old Guard Games’ grand opening over the weekend, and, well, we were blown away. (And we weren’t alone; the place was busy.) Here are some photos from the big shindig.
