Dear MPS Community:
The health and safety of our students and employees remain our highest priority. Our Facilities and Maintenance Services team and MPS contractors continue to work hard on lead paint stabilization.
We remain on track for our goal: All schools that were built before 1950 and serve elementary students will be cleared of lead risks by students’ first day of school. Since our last districtwide update, another five schools have been cleared: Academia de Lenguaje y Bellas Artes (ALBA), Doerfler School, Greenfield Bilingual School, MacDowell Montessori School, and Milwaukee French Immersion School.
Final lead-stabilization painting, cleaning, and testing are happening at an additional 30-plus schools, which are listed below. As we shared in late July, for those schools where work is underway, the district is focusing on lead stabilization and related touch-up painting and reducing the amount of cosmetic painting work that could happen at a later time.
While we believe all of our schools will be ready to welcome students on Tuesday, September 2, we do have contingency plans in place. If it becomes necessary, we could temporarily relocate individual classrooms within their buildings if those individual classrooms need additional work or a final test. We know this is not ideal, and as of right now, we do not expect to have to take this step. Our decisions will be driven by ensuring that every student and employee is in a safe learning space.
As we welcome teachers next week, we will bring in district staff and volunteers to help get our schools ready. We greatly appreciate the patience and partnerships of our educators and our families, and we look forward to welcoming students on Tuesday, September 2.
Sincerely,
Eduardo Galván
Deputy Superintendent
