Friends of the Domes to Host Día de los Muertos Celebration at Mitchell Park Domes

Milwaukee, Wis., October 3, 2024 – Friends of the Domes is hosting its annual Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) Celebration on Friday, October 25, 2024, from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the Mitchell Park Domes.

Día de los Muertos is a joyful celebration of life that takes place each November 1st and 2nd. The Aztecs developed the ritual some 3,000 years ago because they believed one should not grieve the loss of a beloved ancestor who passed. Instead, the Aztecs celebrated their lives and welcomed the return of their spirits to the land of the living once a year.

In honor of Día de los Muertos, students from the surrounding community will be creating traditional ofrendas (offerings made in honor of loved ones) in the Desert Dome. The entire Desert Dome will be decorated in celebration of the holiday.

In addition, the event will have a Mariachi band, Día de los Muertos dancers, Aztec dancers, local food and art vendors, as well as an opportunity for attendees to make crafts to celebrate the holiday in their own homes.

Our annual “Caminata de los Recuerdos” (Walk of Memories) will take place immediately preceding the event. This will offer an opportunity for community members to participate in a candlelight walk from Urban Ecology Center of the Menomonee Valley to the Mitchell Park Domes.

Admission to the Día de los Muertos Celebration is $13-$16. All proceeds benefit Friends of the Domes, a private nonprofit that provides cultural enrichment and educational programming on behalf of the Mitchell Park Horticultural Conservatory.
