If you’re on the internet enough, you listen to a certain sect of music, and you like stuff like The Onion, there’s a good chance you’ve read The Hard Times. The popular satire publication routinely publishes humorous articles about all things in the realm of punk, ska, hardcore, emo, and various other musical subgenres. Some recent favorites include “Help! Jeff Rosenstock Broke Into My House and Is Making Ska Versions of All of My Records” and “Opinion: This Can’t Be the Country I Grew up In, Because There Used To Be Way More Pizza Huts,” among others.
Another new favorite is an article that went up on the site this morning. To be honest, the main focus on the post—“Goth and Metalhead Fight Over Who Gets to Shit on New Deafheaven Album”—doesn’t specifically strike a chord. (Who is Deafheaven?) However, the satirical piece that’s set in Milwaukee resonates because it features none other than US in it. Well, kind of.
The article features a quote from “Tyler Wild” in it. Not to be vain, but we’re pretty sure this fictional Tyler Wild guy is a combination of the names of Milwaukee Record co-founders and editors Tyler Maas (hi!) and Matt Wild. He’s also credited as a music journalist in the piece. Hey, we also write about music! This can’t be a coincidence. Oh, plus the guy who wrote the article also emailed me this morning to tell me he put us in the article.
Though I shudder to think about the existence of a “Tyler Wild” creature that embodies characteristics of both Matt and myself, it’s a legitimate honor to be kinda-sorta mentioned in The Hard Times. In terms of how cool this is, let’s just say it lands somewhere between our upcoming WAMI win (fingers crossed!) and Sheryl Crow being a fan of a Bucks article we wrote. Thanks, The Hard Times.
