For those who don’t know Milwaukee Record‘s backstory, this noble endeavor in mid-market entertainment journalism started as a result of A.V. Club Milwaukee‘s demise. Then-City Editor Matt Wild and frequent contributor Tyler Maas wanted to fill the sudden void in local music, culture, and subversive randomness coverage. Enter Milwaukee Record. If you go back a bit further, the person who was responsible for both of our starts at A.V. Club Milwaukee was Steven Hyden.

Since departing his post as A.V. Club Milwaukee‘s City Editor, Hyden’s work could be seen at renowned publications like The A.V. Club‘s national site, Pitchfork, and most recently at GrantlandAlong the way, he found time to write a book. On May 17, his debut novel, Your Favorite Band Is Killing Me, will be released. A few weeks later, Hyden will join us at Cactus Club to discuss the book Rolling Stone called “highly entertaining,” his time in Milwaukee, and likely much more during the first “Milwaukee Record Book Club.” The Friday, June 24 event will double as a live recording of our “On The Record” podcast (Hyden’s second appearance) and will also feature an audience Q&A portion. Boswell Books will be on hand to sell copies of Your Favorite Band Is Killing Me (to those who haven’t pre-ordered it), and Vander Mill will give out samples of hard cider.

Don’t miss Hyden’s return to Milwaukee and the first (who knows, maybe only) edition of Milwaukee Record Book Club! The FREE event begins at 7 p.m.
