Long-running home and garden shop MOD GEN, 211 N. Broadway St., will close its doors for good after December 24, 2025. The Third Ward business made the announcement on social media Monday morning.

“This will be our last holiday season with you,” MOD GEN owner Doug McDonald wrote. “After twenty-five years it is time for us to retire and start a new chapter of life. This journey has been filled with many successes and more than our fair share of challenges, and we are so grateful for the patronage and support of the greater Milwaukee community that made it possible. Thank You!

“December 24, 2025, will be our last day open to the public,” McDonald continued. “Please join us over the next few months as we wind down the business with holiday sales and inventory liquidations. Shop early and get it before it’s gone, and don’t forget to use up any MOD GEN gift cards you may have hiding in your purse or wallet.”

MOD GEN (a.k.a. “modern general” store) launched in Shorewood back in 2001, and was originally called Garden Room. It moved to its current Third Ward location in 2016.
