Third Space Brewing’s Women Brewers to Brew Annual “Like a Girl IPA” to Honor International Women’s Day
Each year the women of Third Space Brewing collaborate with the Pink Boots Society to support women working in the traditionally male-dominated brewing industry.
MILWAUKEE, Wisc. – February 6, 2023 – Each year the women of Third Space Brewing collaborate with other women in the brewing industry through the Pink Boots Society to brew a beer that supports women in brewing. The beer is called Like a Girl IPA and Third Space Brewing will donate a portion of the proceeds from sales of it to the Wisconsin Chapter of the Pink Boots Society. The group provides scholarships, educational opportunities, and other services to the amazing women who call Wisconsin’s beer industry home.
On Wednesday February 8, a team of women representing various roles in the brewing industry from brewers to accountants will descend on Third Space Brewing from across the state of Wisconsin and a few from Illinois to brew Like a Girl together. The group will also participate in a malt sensory analysis session led by Amy Rohrschneider, one of the women brewers of Third Space Brewing.
One month later, on March 8th, International Women’s Day, Third Space will release Like a Girl IPA on draft and in 4-pack 16oz cans at the brewery’s tap room at 1505 W. St. Paul Avenue in Milwaukee’s Menomonee River Valley. The release party will feature live music from a women-only band, food from women-owned food vendors and a chance to learn more about opportunities for women in brewing from representatives of the Pink Boots Society.
On Wednesday February 8’s brew day, there will be great video and photo opportunities at 9:00am when the team starts the mash in on the brew. Between 10:00am-2:00pm, members of Pink Boots Society will be available for photos and interviews including Samantha Danen, Chapter Leader of Wisconsin Pink Boots, and a women brewer on the Third Space Brewing team.
The goal of the project is to highlight the roles strong women fill in every aspect of the beer business and to raise funds to help more women pursue a career in this traditionally male-dominated industry. The project is part of Pink Boots Society’s Collaboration Brew Day, in which breweries across the country will brew beers to honor International Women’s Day. The team at Malteurop stepped in again this year to donate 100% of the malt for Like A Girl to help further the amount Third Space can donate to Pink Boots Society. To date, Third Space has donated $6,000 the
cause. The funds raised are used by the chapter for educational events including upcoming trips to the Malteurop Winona Malthouse and a Wisconsin hop farm this summer. Pink Boots also hopes to offer a technical-based scholarship in 2023.
According to Danen, “The Pink Boots Society was created to empower women beer professionals and help advance their careers in the industry through education. And that’s exactly what this Like A Girl project is all about. We bring women together from all over the state to network with one another and to experience first-hand what it’s like to brew beer on a professional level. By doing so, my hope is that days like these are an inspiration for future generations of girls and women, and that
doors that have previously felt impossible to get through will open more easily for those to come.”
2023’s Like A Girl beer recipe will use the same malt bill from previous iterations of the beer along with the 2023 Yakima Chief 6th Annual Pink Boots Hop Blend which includes the hops Loral, Ekuanot, and experimental hop HBC 586. We should expect an aroma profile of citrus, herbal, stone fruit, tropical, and woody. This profile will be balanced with the sweet malt presence and silky mouthfeel the grain bill provides.
