Milwaukee County Parks Unveil Upgraded Lyons Park Playground
Milwaukee, WI October 31, 2024 – Milwaukee County Parks hosted a ribbon cutting ceremony on Wednesday, October 30th, to celebrate the grand opening of the newly renovated playground at Lyons Park, located at 3301 S 55th St, Milwaukee, WI. This event marks the completion of an exciting project that brings modern, ADA-accessible play features and improved safety surfacing to the community.
Originally installed in 1997, the Lyons Park Playground was identified as needing replacement, and funding was allocated through the 2023 adopted capital budget. During the summer of 2023, in-person community engagement helped shape the design of the new playground. The playground features separate play structures for children aged 2-5 and 5-12, swings, and a unique maze of play panels for younger children. The surfacing has been upgraded to a combination of poured-in-place rubber and engineered wood fiber, offering a safer and cleaner environment for kids to enjoy.
“We are excited to introduce this modern playground at Lyons Park,” said Guy Smith, Executive Director of Milwaukee County Parks. “This new equipment and enhanced surfacing create a safe and welcoming space for children of all abilities to play and explore. The project reflects our commitment to providing high-quality recreational opportunities for every community.”
The approved budget for this project also included the removal of old playground equipment, installation of new pathways, benches, bike racks, and other site improvements to make the park more accessible and enjoyable for visitors of all ages.
“Providing safe, free and accessible recreational opportunities for Milwaukee County residents is critical in achieving our goal to become the healthiest community in Wisconsin,” said Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley. “Revitalized outdoor spaces like the new Lyons Park Playground are essential for fostering stronger children, families, and neighborhoods. I will continue supporting these investments that make our communities more vibrant and support the health and wellbeing of all Milwaukee County residents.”
“We all care about the quality of our parks, and being able to enjoy bringing our children to playgrounds within our neighborhoods is such a great part of raising kids. I commend the Parks Department, my predecessor, now Milwaukee Alder, Peter Burgelis and the dedicated neighbors who advocated for this project to get done.” Milwaukee County Board Supervisor Sky Capriolo.
The new playground represents another step toward Milwaukee County Parks’ ongoing efforts to ensure recreational spaces are safe, inclusive, and environmentally sustainable. This is the eighteenth playground within the Milwaukee County Parks System to see improvements in the last four years.
2024 has been a milestone year for Milwaukee County Parks, with numerous projects completed, initiated, or funded to improve and expand our park system. These include:
