When we last checked in with Gold Steps, the Milwaukee alternative outfit was soaking up the sun and gallivanting in the sand in the summer-suited music video for its radio-ready “Rent Free” single. This week, the band formally kicked off what looks to be another busy year—the 10th year of its existence—by releasing a decidedly different single into the world.
“Mirrored Souls” made its radio debut yesterday, and today brings about the premiere of the new song’s music video. Unlike “Rent Free” and “Beautiful Mess” (the other 2025 Gold Steps single/video), “Mirrored Souls” taps into a deeper and more emotional side of the typically uptempo and fun-loving band, as vocalist Betty Mauritz sings from the perspective of someone remembering an old flame and wondering what might’ve been.
The visuals match the contemplative and sentimental song to a T, with Mauritz putting a pop-tinged spin on downtrodden lyrics while exploring a forest and walking the shoreline in front of Lake Michigan. The video—shot by Gold Steps bassist Ryan Rivas—also features the rest of the band, who are present for a seance-like ceremony that seems to be an effort to conjure the spirits of a past relationship.
Whether you’ve ever looked back and wondered “what if?” or you just want to hear a great song with a visual component, check out the “Mirrored Souls” music video below. You can also see Gold Steps in real life when the band plays at Anodyne’s Walker’s Point Roastery as part of the Snüzfest benefit concert on Saturday, January 31.
