I was studying the menu at Clutch Sandwich Co., a new deli sandwich joint at 3rd St. Market Hall. The Clutch Club looked good. Maybe The Gardner. As I continued my sandwich study, a man appeared behind the counter.

“First time?” he asked.

“Yep,” I replied.

Without saying a word, he pointed at a single item on the menu: the Chipotle Chicken Salad sandwich. I looked from the menu to the man. His face was solemn, serious.

“Okay!” I said.

A few minutes later I was tucking into a Clutch Sandwich Co. Chipotle Chicken Salad sandwich. It came with a pickle and a small bag of potato chips. I topped it off with a cup of tomato soup. With tip, the whole thing put me back $22.

Was it worth $22? Yes. The sandwich was generous and chonky: pulled chicken, bacon, avocado, and more smooshed between two slices of Texas toast. The filling was agreeably gooey. The Texas toast was perfectly crisp. Alone it was great—dipped in the tomato soup, it was greater.

Clutch Sandwich Co. is a bit of a departure for 3rd St. Market Hall. Instead of being operated by an independent vendor, Clutch is run by the downtown food hall itself. Its menu is the work of 3rd St. Culinary Director Cullen Moffatt. The new Green Thumb salad spot is operated by 3rd St., too.

Will I return to Clutch Sandwich Co.? Yes. Though it’s straight up impossible to top the Cambo Hot Beef sandwich at fellow 3rd St. restaurant Num Pang, Clutch offers a no-frills grab-and-go option perfect for a quick lunch. The entire menu looks great. I’ll try something else next time, solemn recommendation or no solemn recommendation.
