WMSE 91.7FM is one of Milwaukee’s best things, full stop. The freeform, listener-supported, and forever awesome noncommercial radio station has been a Milwaukee institution for 45 years. It delivers incredible music over the airwaves day after day, and produces incredible events like Rockabilly Chili, Art & Music, and the Backyard BBQ. It’s like the station should have its own day or something. Especially on September 17, a.k.a. 9/17…
Well how about that, it is September 17, and it is WMSE 91.7FM Day! Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson made the second bit official earlier this morning with a mayoral proclamation. “The City of Milwaukee commends WMSE 91.7FM for connecting people through music, culture, education and service for 45 years,” reads the proclamation. “Now, therefore, I, Cavalier Johnson, Mayor of the City of Milwaukee, do hereby proclaim Thursday, September 17, 2026, to be WMSE 91.7FM Day.”

WMSE will keep the party going tonight from 5-11 p.m. with a Nine One Seven Day record spin at Wiggle Room. A host of WMSE DJs will spin nothing but 7-inch records. (You know, 45s. Get it?) “Six hours of records, selections, left turns, right turns, deep cuts, oddities, favorites, and whatever else finds its way onto the turntable,” says the station. SEE YOU THERE.
And yes, there’s more. WMSE’s Friday Night Freak Show will take over Oriental Theatre this Friday with a screening of 1990’s House Party. And then, on Monday, September 21 at noon, the station will unveil its new “Sound Check” program. The weekly 30-minute show will feature exclusive on-site soundcheck performances from notable touring artists, as well as interviews led by WMSE DJs. Monday’s inaugural show, for example, will find Damian of WMSE’s late-night “Theory of De-Evolution” show hanging out with none other than The Wedding Present. Nice!
