During last year’s Mile Of Music, the second such iteration of the “handcrafted artisan festival” in the northeast Wisconsin city of Appleton, a combined 39 of the 200 bands and solo artists booked to play hailed from Milwaukee and its surrounding cities. We caught as many of the 88 total shows those 39 projects played over the course of those four early August days, and it was a (mostly) good time. The lineup for Mile Of Music’s third year (or “Mile 3” for you syllable conservationists out there) has about the same representation, with 34 bands and solo projects based in Milwaukee (or in a couple cases, nearby cities) set to play a whopping 85 shows—more than 10 percent of the event’s total shows—between this afternoon and Sunday.

Those willing to make the 100-some mile trek up construction-laden US 41 will get to see such rarities as GGOOLLDD (who just did its last public* Milwaukee show of 2015 last week) play the patio of a “Sports Pub,” No/No in the backyard of the always awesome Fox River House, as well as Hello Death and Whips doing two shows apiece in nontraditional makeshift music venues as many days. Add in a bunch of Jordin Baas and Jack Tell gigs virtually everywhere near College Avenue, a Lex Allen appearance, Body Futures’ first Fox Cities shows, Hugh Bob & The Hustle, Greatest Lakes, Nineteen Thirteen, Twin Brother at a fucking night club, and many more, and you have a cast of Milwaukee talent that would put the local representation of any block party or festival here to shame. Did we mention all these shows are free? All of these shows are free.

Sadly, we won’t be able to make it to the festival Grantland‘s Steven Hyden told us he prefers over Summerfest. Should your schedule be more open and your gas tank be fuller than ours, this Milwaukeean’s guide to Mile Of Music might help you hear a steady stream of familiar sounds in an unfamiliar setting.
