If today’s weather seems especially weird—Is it raining outside? Wait, is it snowing outside? Now rain again?—there’s a reason for that. After 37 years of dedicated service, veteran Milwaukee weatherman John Malan is calling it quits. Malan announced his impending retirement back in January; his final broadcast will be tonight at 10 p.m. on TMJ4. Weather will never be the same.

To celebrate Malan’s decade-spanning career, Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett dropped by TMJ4 last night and presented the suspiciously coiffed weatherman with proclamations from the city, state, and county declaring today, March 1, 2017, John Malan Day. Though Barrett didn’t mention Malan’s tenure as a co-owner of the sadly defunct Fun World, we know it was on his mind.

Beyond being a familiar face in Milwaukee for nearly four decades, Malan served in Vietnam, and earned a Purple Heart. His departure follows the retirement of another long-serving Milwaukee meteorologist, Vince Condella, who left the airwaves last year.
